Since this Friday, twenty electric tricycles support passenger transportation in the city of Pinar del Río.

With capacity for six people each and a range of 120 kilometers per charge, the new vehicles will have to make at least ten daily trips from the center of the capital of Pinar del Río to the Abel Santamaría general teaching hospital.

Carlos Rodríguez González, director of Transportation in the province, explains that these are vehicles assembled in the country that will help alleviate the complex situation of passenger transportation.

The calculations carried out indicate that, daily, about 1,200 people could move on two very busy routes, which link the heart of the city with the hospital area, several educational centers and the University of Medical Sciences.

Another advantage is that they will have a fare of ten pesos, much more affordable for the population and several times lower than the means that currently cover the same route.

The official pointed out that all the drivers are qualified, and that a base was created for the new vehicles in the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes district.

“It is a significant help for the population, so we are sure that they will be widely accepted,” he said.

The introduction of these teams is part of the Ministry of Transport’s strategy to contribute to the change of the energy matrix.

Although they are the first vehicles of their type to arrive in Vueltabajo, their operation for a long time, in other territories of the country, has already established that they constitute a viable alternative for urban transportation, given the difficulties with fuel and the situation presented by the automobile fleet nationwide.
