The UDI presidential candidate pointed out that “the majority of our sector would be in favor of voting” for the lifting of bank secrecy, but also noted that “our entire sector is asking for the same thing, that there be decent corporate governance in the SII.”

Parliamentarians from Chile Vamos have aligned themselves with the mayor of Providencia, Evelyn Matthei, regarding the lifting of bank secrecy, stating that they are available, provided that certain conditions are met.

The UDI presidential candidate pointed out that “the majority of our sector would be voting” for the lifting of banking secrecy, but she also pointed out that “our entire sector is asking for the same thing, that there be decent corporate governance in the SII.”

Along the same lines, the head of the Renovación Nacional bench, deputy Ximena Ossandón, added that “our concerns are elsewhere, and that is what we have to discuss, the fact of how the director of the Internal Revenue Service is appointed, so that he/she is not at the service of the government in power.”

“Also, the way in which bank secrecy will be requested and used,” he added.

Along the same lines, his counterpart in the Lower House and deputy head of the UDI bench, Henry Leal, argued that “what we do not agree with is that what the government wants should be done, that any public official can access it, with all freedom, to the accounts of all Chileans.”

In addition, he expressed that, “now, if we want to move forward in creating an autonomous body, independent of the government in power, that can access, we are absolutely in agreement.”

For their part, the government and the ruling party continue to call on the opposition to approve the lifting of banking secrecy, an initiative included in the Fiscal Pact project, arguing its benefits to combat corruption and organized crime.
