Despite the 12 days of teacher strikes recorded in Santa Fe (14, if you add January and February 2, before the school year begins), the Minister of Education, José Goity, assured his intention to reach the 190 effective days of classes this 2024. For the moment, the winter holidays continue on the scheduled dates: from July 8 to 19.

Recovery of lost time “is under evaluation,” Goity said. “What we are not going to do is announce it or present it until, first, we have it resolved and discussed with the entire educational system. We constantly analyze alternatives to increase the days of classes and be able to consolidate the amount we need,” said the official. to El Litoral, after this Thursday’s event at the Government House where the new project for the building of the Higher Institute No. 8 “Almirante Brown” was announced.

“Winter vacations will remain the same,” the minister stressed. “We will also evaluate how the second semester will unfold in terms of the development of school days.”

The Federal Council of Education (CFE) set a goal of 190 effective school days at the national level (through Resolution 165 of 2011), both to improve the learning of children and to be within the average determined by international standards. This goal remains pending most of the time. It should be noted that this is a federal commitment in the CFE, but in reality, by law Nº 25.864, 180 school days per year are established.

Asked about an upcoming meeting of the teaching sector’s collective bargaining committees, the minister said that “the Ministry of Labor is evaluating when to make the call, also based on the other collective bargaining committees, which are basically the Central and Health ones.”

However, he said that “we will surely have a decision in the coming days, by the first or second week of July.”

Goity was in Buenos Aires this Wednesday, at a new meeting of the Federal Council of Education, where work already being carried out by the 24 jurisdictions was continued. “There were two meetings in parallel: one on literacy and another on teacher training, and then we had some more administrative issues,” he said.

Federal Literacy Network

The Secretary of National Education, Carlos Torrendell, led on Wednesday the 26th, the launch of the Federal Literacy Network, which will serve to articulate the technical representatives of the 24 jurisdictions with the national authority in the implementation and development of the various strategic plans, as well as providing access to training resources from national and international experts, among other benefits.

In this regard, Goity clarified: “There is not a national literacy plan. There are 24 literacy plans that each province is developing and that we articulate through a national agreement.”

Regarding this federal network, Torrendell said: “It is essential to work together. Literacy is a matter for everyone. Above all for those of us who are here and have the opportunity to carry out this type of policy. We have managed to preserve education, despite the various contexts that our country has gone through. Let us continue to take care of it.”

“The goal is to be able to work together to ensure that teachers can teach better and, at the same time, students learn better,” concluded the national secretary, at the opening of the national meeting.

The agenda of the day included various activities shared by jurisdictional representatives and authorities from the Ministry of Education, including: discussions, interjurisdictional and interregional work tables on jurisdictional literacy plans, sharing and conclusions.
