PDI Tarapacá presents first homicide report 2023

The Tarapacá Investigative Police (PDI) presented its first homicide report of the year 2023 in a ceremony that was attended by the Prefect Inspector Cristian Lobos, head of the Tarapacá Police Region, the Tarapacá Regional Presidential Delegate, Daniel Quinteros, and the Regional Prosecutor of Tarapacá, Trinidad Steinert, among other notable guests. The presentation was given by Deputy Commissioner María José Díaz, a lawyer with extensive experience in homicide investigation and criminal analysis.

The presentation, moderated by political analyst Libardo Buitrago, featured a panel of experts that included lawyer Marcela Tapia, the Chief Prosecutor of the Tamarugal Prosecutor’s Office, Hardy Torres, the Chief Prosecutor of the Criminal Analysis Unit and Investigative Focus of Tarapacá (SACFI), Paola Apablaza, psychologist Carol Thiele, and Subprefect Christian Sayago, head of the Iquique Homicide Brigade. The report, prepared by the Iquique Criminal Analysis Office (OFAN), aims to characterize the phenomenon of homicides through the analysis of various variables.

María José Rivas, a panelist at the event, highlighted that the presentation seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the phenomenon and to the design of policies and plans on the matter at a regional level. “This is part of our Strategic Plan for Police Development 2023-2028 and demonstrates the work carried out by OFAN,” she said.

International analyst Libardo Buitrago stressed the importance of having accurate data to build effective public policies. “A society that does not have data cannot know what will happen or build adequate public policies,” he said.

Attorney Marcela Tapia emphasized the importance of having a territorial report that provides specific data and contexts on the evolution of crime in the region. “This allows for the design of criminal policies that are closer to reality and provides greater synergy in the necessary responses,” she said.

The Tarapacá PDI report highlights the importance of implementing effective public policies and promoting collaboration between the institutions of the criminal prosecution system and the community to face the challenges of crime. Encouraging citizen reporting and strengthening education and support programs for victims are essential steps to build a safer environment.
