Through a statement addressed mainly to the coastal municipalities of the department, the Government of Córdoba alerted the community regarding the arrival of a climatic phenomenon, which could significantly affect some areas of the territory.

This is the formation of tropical depression number two in the Tropical Atlantic Ocean, which could rapidly intensify and reach tropical storm status during the night of this Saturday, June 29. In fact, according to what the authorities announced, it is expected to become a hurricane next Sunday, June 30, and to enter the Caribbean Sea basin in the early hours of Monday, July 1.

According to the authorities, this phenomenon could reach its closest point in the national territory between Tuesday and Wednesday, July 2 and 3, although it has not yet been determined with certainty what path it would follow within the Caribbean Sea.

Taking this information into account, a regional surveillance alert has been issued for all sectors of the Colombian Caribbean coast, including the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba, Antioquia and Chocó, as well as for the archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Specifically, the Government of Córdoba called for caution in the municipalities of San Antero, San Bernardo del Viento, Moñitos, Puerto Escondido and Los Córdobas, given the risk of the presence of storm surges and intense rains.

In addition, through a statement, the departmental administration urged the population to take into account a series of recommendations, which can help minimize the impact of the phenomenon in the territory.

Suggestions include:

  • Activate contingency and emergency plans.
  • Maintain constant communication with the community and coordinate with relief agencies to ensure a timely response.
  • Secure roofs and vulnerable structures.
  • Keep drains and canals clean.
  • Prepare emergency kits that include drinking water, non-perishable food, medicines and flashlights.
