Tabilo becomes a giant in Mallorca: second ATP title and new number one in Chile

Alejandro Tabilo (24th) continues building an unforgettable season on the ATP circuitThis Saturday, the Chilean defeated the Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-3, 6-4 and won the Mallorca Championship, the second ATP 250 tournament of his career.

He also won the national championship in his third final of the season on different surfaces. At the beginning of the year he won the trophy in Auckland on hard court, in February he lost the final in Santiago (on clay) and now he has won a first on grass.

This ability to adapt has marked the leap of Tabilo, semi-finalist of the Rome Masters 1000. He is no longer unknown to anyone, and today he once again showed that he feels good on big stages. As of Monday, he will be the brand new 19th in the world in the ATP ranking, surpassing Nicolás Jarry, as the number one in Chile.

“I’m having an incredible, crazy year. I appreciate the support of all the Chileans. The level I’ve played has been excellent. I still can’t believe it, I hope I can maintain my level and stay on top,” he said on the court after the match.

Tabilo enters the great history of Chilean tennis and adds an achievement that was elusive for Nicolás Massú, Fernando González and Marcelo Ríos: winning a tournament on grass. The last time a national player played in the final was Jaime Fillol in 1977 and he won the only trophy for the country on this surface in Itaparica 1982.
