A “watch” alert has been issued for six departments in the Colombian Caribbean due to the approach of tropical storm ‘Beryl’. This alert includes the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre and Córdoba, as well as the departments of Antioquia and Chocó, and the archipelago of San Andrés and Providencia. According to the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studiessuch (Ideam), ‘Beryl’ could rise to hurricane status this Sunday.

The Ideam has indicated that, if the stormIf it maintains its current path, it could enter the Caribbean Sea basin in the early hours of next Monday. It is expected to come closest to Colombian territory between Tuesday and Wednesday, moving at a speed of 30 km/h and with sustained winds of up to 65 km/h.

The latest bulletin from Ideam indicates that the wave height in the Caribbean Sea is between 1.0 and 2.0 meters, with winds heading east-northeast at a speed of between 7 and 15 knots. In view of the possible arrival of ‘Beryl’, Ideam has recommended keep active the protocols, contingency plans and all necessary actions for the response capacity in the event of the storm entering the region.
