The Government of Colombia will open the doors of the Casa de Nariño to receive representatives of the LGBTIQ+ population in commemoration of International LGBTIQ+ Pride Day. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Equality and Equity, reaffirms the Government’s commitment to inclusion and equal rights for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

During the event, which celebrated more than half a century of struggle for the vindication of LGBTIQ+ rights, The historic raising of the LGBTIQ+ flag took place in the Plaza de Armas of the Casa de Nariño. This symbolic gesture not only represents government support for the LGBTIQ+ community, but also marks significant progress towards the visibility and recognition of their rights in all areas of Colombian society.

The Ministry of Equality and Equity highlighted the importance of this commemoration, remembering the events that gave rise to the LGBTIQ+ movement 55 years ago in New York, and underlining the need to continue working to eliminate discrimination and stigma towards people of this type. population, especially in rural contexts and ethnic communities.

In addition, the creation of the Directorate for the Guarantee of the Rights of the LGBTIQ+ Population was announced within the vice-ministry of diversities of the Ministry of Equality and Equity. In turn, they pointed out that “today we accompany the more than 500 thousand people who recognize themselves from their gender diversities and sexual orientation as members of the LGBTIQ+ population. (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, non-binary and other genders), with concrete actions such as the creation and implementation of the Directorate for the Guarantee of the Rights of the LGBTIQ+ Population.”

Finally, the Ministry of Equality and Equity recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Brazil, with the aim of exchanging experiences and strengthening public policies on LGBTIQ+ rights.
