Like the sea is a film directed by Nicolás Gil Lavedra with Sofía Gala Castiglione and Zoe Hochbaum (co-writer and producer) as the protagonists of a family drama that has the special participation of the Spanish Carmen Maura.
After being awarded at the Iberoamerican Film Festival with the Panorama Latino award and with the Mauricio Litman Public Vote Award in the fiction feature film competition of the Punta del Este International Festival, its premiere arrives in cinemas in Argentina, this Thursday 28th March.
«Like the sea It is a film that addresses bonds and talks about them, that explores the complexity of family relationships, intertwining the pain of loss with the hope of redemption, that asks about motherhood and ways of mothering, that investigates the femininities and their places in society, what is expected and what comes to alter what is established,” says Nicolás Gil Lavedra, the director.
The film portrays the story of Azul (Hochbaum) and Paula (Castiglione), who have just lost their mother, Teresa. Paula, her older sister, decides to cremate the body, but Azul is not satisfied and looks for money among her mother’s things to pay for a funeral. Going through the drawers he discovers a revealing photo: Paula is actually not his sister but her mother, and Teresa her grandmother. Azul is shocked and wants to know about his father. Paula tells him that it was a passing romance during adolescence, when she ran away to Cabo Polonio. Azul’s desire to meet him and Paula’s guilt for lying are the protagonists’ driving force to leave, almost without resources, for Uruguay.
On the journey they make an obligatory stop at Tía Mecha’s (Maura), who never met Azul because of the historical disagreements with Teresa about the identity they hid from her. The journey continues and with each experience they recover a little of their history and build a new bond.
