If you like horror and movies about possessions and exorcisms, you might want to put the premiere of The Georgetown Exorcisma film starring Russell Crowe that will debut in Spanish theaters this coming May 31.
It is a production that has been kept in a drawer for about five years, in the sense that the film was shot in 2019 but its promoters did not find a distribution partner and had to watch how, just a year ago, another film arrived from the genre to cinemas with the same star actor. Yes, The Georgetown Exorcism is not a sequel to 2023’s The Pope’s Exorcist.
From time to time it happens that two projects arrive in Hollywood with quite similar premises. We had the most obvious case in 2014, when we were able to see in a matter of months the Hercules films with Dwayne Johnson and Hercules: The Origin of Legend, each one worse than the previous, by the way, but of course seeing two proposals so similar and with the same actor clash.
Although we have to say that beyond the two promotional images that you can see above these words there are not much more similarities between both productions. The Pope’s exorcist proposed a more secular history inspired by the real files of Father Gabriele Amorth, while The Georgetown Exorcism takes us on the trail of a troubled actor who sees how his life falls apart when he is playing a priest in a movie.
It’s possible that without the success of The Pope’s Exorcist, which grossed $78 million after a $20 million investment, The Georgetown Exorcism was still looking for a distribution partner. But the film has already begun to be promoted and this May 31, let’s remember, it will hit theaters.
