Esteban Kukuriczka (‘The Snow Society’): “After watching the film I had a feeling of emptiness”

The actors of ‘The Snow Society‘Extreme situations happened during the filming of the film. But they had each other. He fellowship that was born during the recording is one of the reasons for the worldwide success that JA Bayona’s film has had. “It was almost like a sociological experiment what we live. Now I have 30 friends and brothers who understand what we are talking about because it was a shared experience,” he details to this newspaper. Esteban Kukuriczka, interpreter of Adolfo ‘Fito’ Strauch in the Oscar-nominated film, during his time in Barcelona. “We lived through moments of cold, hunger, madness and weighing ourselves 200 times a day during filming,” he explains, and when the film came out they faced the fan phenomenon together.

Some followers who now accompany him wherever he goes. In fact, dozens of teenagers gather during the course of this interview at the door of the Espai Philae to get a photo or autograph of the actor. This Monday and Tuesday, the performer taught a course that focuses on letting go and relying on the community at the Barcelona performing arts school, aimed at acting training and personal development. “I don’t think I’ll get used to the fan phenomenon and I suppose it will have an expiration date“says the interpreter, still surprised by everything that is happening. “Sometimes it overwhelms me a little and I don’t understand why it has generated such a stir among teenagers because of the type of film it is,” adds the Argentine.

Companionship and community

Kukuriczka defines his time in ‘The Snow Society’ as a “life experience” and a unique “learning”, since, as an actor from Argentina, it was “unthinkable” for him to participate in such a blockbuster. But he is still trying to clarify his feelings after the brutal situation he experienced and everything that was generated around him. “It was an extraordinary film and I really like the result, but after watching it I felt a feeling of emptiness. A year and a half of my life passed in two hours. My experience was bigger than what you see“says the actor. Of course, he feels more than grateful: “I know I’m here for the film. “I don’t think the doors would be open to me to teach in Spain if it weren’t for that.”

Thanks to filming the multi-award-winning film at the Goya Awards, the performer discovered that behind acting there was also the real possibility of connecting with other people. “‘The snow society’ had a lot to do with that network of team, of community“, he explains. “Over time I have changed and I am no longer so interested in the work itself, nor in the artistic fact, I am interested in the work process. I feel that the result does not reflect all my life experience“says the interpreter.

Be seen in action

All this is what Kukuriczka has tried to convey in his seminar in Barcelona, entitled ‘Let Yourself See‘. “The most traditional training teaches us to be showing something all the time, but I am very interested in thinking about acting not as something to do, but simply letting ourselves be seen. I feel that sometimes one wants to impress an emotionand in reality he does it simply to avoid what is happening to you“, points out the Argentine about what he wants to teach in his course.

A fear of showing “vulnerable“which has recently gained strength in society with social networks. “We live in a time that has a lot to do with everything being outward. On Instagram we show everything we do, “she explains. This need for immediacy is causing a new generation of actors to suffer more.”frustration over error” and “little tolerance for taking time“. In this sense, the actor believes that “the performance is transformative“, since it allows us to “think about ourselves, become aware of what we feel, what we think and how we are.” “We live with our own lies and with the lies of life, of society. Let acting be a place to rehearse honesty,” claims the performer.

Uncertain future

After having touched the sky with ‘The Snow Society’, Kukuriczka now lives the future with uncertainty. “The situation in my country at the moment is very complex.. The National Theater Institute was closed, as well as the INCAA, which is our film institute, and all audiovisual productions were suspended,” he details about the moment that the world of culture in Argentina is currently experiencing. “It’s a pretty sad moment in that sense. I hope it is also to learn something as a society. What takes a long time to build is quickly destroyed“concludes the actor.
