In 2014, the first installment of The Maze Runnerthe youth science fiction film that adapts the author’s novel James Dashner and that finally ended up becoming a film trilogy. Now, just six years after the release of the last film, it has been announced that they are working on a reboot of the franchise.

Surprisingly, several reports launched that 20th Century Studios (known for productions such as Avatar and Deadpool) is in talks with the screenwriter Jack Paglen to be in charge of writing the new script. Paglen previously worked at Alien: Covenant and in the feature film Transcendence: Virtual Identity (Transcendence – 2014), film starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Regarding the reboot, there will be no attempt to start the story from scratch or continue directly with the sequel to the third film. Instead, the company plans to tell a new story that maintains connection with the elements that captivated audiences in the original film. This approach follows the model used in Planet of the Apes: new kingdom (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), where the franchise’s universe was explored through subtle references rather than repeating the known plot.

The first installment follows a young man named Thomaswho wakes up in a place known as The Glade, a field surrounded by walls with two gates that open every morning, revealing an immense labyrinth. None of the young people locked up remember who they are. Before night falls and the doors close to protect them from murderous creatures, the residents of the claustrophobic space explore the labyrinth in search of a way out or, at least, answers as to why they are locked there.

In 2015, its sequel arrived Maze Runner: Trial by Fire (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), while the trilogy concluded with the last installment Maze Runner: The Death Cure (Maze Runner: The Death Cure) in 2018. The saga featured the performances of Dylan O’Brien (teen wolf), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Queen’s Gambit), Kaya Scodelario (Skins) and Will Poulter (Midsommar), among others.

Wesballdirector of the original films, will return to this reboot as a producer alongside Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (stargirl) and Lee Stollman (Life of Crime). Although it is recent news, we will be awaiting the direction this project will take.
