With the failure of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Warner Bros. put an end to a 10-year cinematographic universe that started very strong at the box office but soon sank as a victim of poor creative and commercial decisions that wiped out everyone. one of its characters, including Wonder Woman which, despite initial doubts, will not finally have a third installment.
The news did not come as a surprise to a large part of DC fans, who are perfectly aware of the James Gunn’s interest in making a clean slate in everything that he had not directed before for the now defunct DCEU, but it did leave Chris Pine, star of Wonder Woman and WW 1984, astonished, who cannot explain how Hollywood gives up a product that was profitable:
“I was surprised that they said no to a billion dollar franchise and decided to go somewhere else. “I don’t know what the reasoning was behind this decision, it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character and Patty (Jenkins) is a very thoughtful director.”
These statements by the actor were collected by Business Insider, where he also acknowledges whether or not there was a Wonder Woman 3, his character was already out for obvious reasons: “It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back.”he added, stating that he agreed to sign for the film when its director sold it to him as something very different from the conception that we usually have of a film of the genre in Marvel and DC: “He told me: ‘This is Casablanca, that is the movie I want to make ‘I was like, oh, that’s cool because when have you seen a superhero movie that was a love story and had nothing to do with blowing things up?’
Wonder Woman, from success to failure in three years
Going back to Pine’s first statement, the actor forgets how Wonder Woman 1984 ended with numerous criticisms of public and audience in the face of what was a sequel much inferior in all aspects to the film released in 2017. That is why perhaps James Gunn did not see the point in staying with the character, also having to commit to a story not supervised by him.
