The (now) DreamWorks classic ended up having its own tetralogy, several specials and a few spin-offs

A few decades ago it seemed that no animation studio could overshadow Disney. And although DreamWorks started with a lot of desire and strength thanks to films like ‘The Prince of Egypt’ and ‘The Road to El Dorado’… It was not until he completely switched to CGI with a fantasy comedy with unlikely protagonists which ended up establishing itself as one of the most powerful animation studios in the world.

THE 10 BEST SERIES OF THE DECADE (2010-2019)

Onions, a curse, and great songs for a while

For better and worse, ‘Shrek’ broke the mold altogether. To begin with, we had as protagonists a grumpy and lonely ogre who wants to take back the swamp from him, a donkey who won’t shut up even under water, and a princess who delivers delightful kicks. AND The mix worked amazingly.

With plenty of winks and twists to fairy tales and their Disney versionsa good remix of current songs, a lot of humor (and in Spain an impeccable dubbing headed by Cruz and Raya), the success of ‘Shrek‘It was immediate. Not only did it win the first Oscar in history for Best Animated Film, but it continued to expand with three more films, several Christmas specials and a series and two films dedicated to Puss in Boots.

If we still have it pending, right now we have the first three ‘Shrek’ movies available on Netflix but they leave us until further notice starting next may 17th.

Although it can be said that things have been on the decline since ‘Shrek 2’, it cannot be denied that the ogre changed the course of DreamWorks forever. Because ‘Shrek’ went from being the film with which they punished the animators who screwed up in ‘The Prince of Egypt’ to making the studio switch completely to CGI and opt for a much more badass humor and that aftertaste of pop culture that haunted them for many years and from which they still haven’t completely gotten rid of.

But while we see whether or not ‘Shrek’ returns with a sequel, a reboot, or whatever DreamWorks want to get it out of the way, at least we have the original trilogy for a little while longer.
