The road has not been easy for the next Avengers movie. In July 2022, as part of San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced the realization of Avengers: The Kang Dynastya project that was quickly joined by the director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) and the screenwriter Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania).

However, the poor result of Quantumania and, above all, the actor’s judicial problems Jonathan Majors, summoned to be the main protagonist of the film by playing the villain Kang, began to shake all the plans that the head of Marvel, Kevin Feige, had in mind. First, Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange 2) was revealed as the new writer, replacing Lovenesss, while Cretton also exited the project, although he will remain attached to the MCU with the sequel to Shang-Chi. And once Majors’ departure was confirmed, the film left behind the subtitle of The Kang Dynasty.

With the production keeping in sight a release set for May 1, 2026, not much else has been revealed in recent months, as the initiative still does not tie in a new director while they reinvent the focus of the story to minimize the role of Kang, which would fall to a new actor. But now a new report sheds some light on what is being prepared with Avengers 5.

According to the insider known as DanielRPK, the film aims to begin filming in January 2025 in the United Kingdom and its story will be “more grounded,” although it will maintain elements associated with the multiverse that was unleashed from Spider-Man: No Way Home and which then continued to expand with Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, Loki and even Quantumania.

Additionally, the focus will be a smaller version of The Avengers, so new characters are expected to join the team. Meanwhile, it is not expected that The Fantastic Four be part of the initiative, since their film is set in another universe and it is expected that the characters – along with the new version of the X-Men – will only come into contact with the rest of the MCU in Los Avengers 6.

In this whole scenario, for now it is not clear what will happen to Kang, but names like John David Washington (Tenet) and Colman Domingo (Rustin) have been named as possible replacements to continue the multiversal Conqueror story.

The Avengers 5 maintains its release date for now, but if filming begins in January 2025, it will leave just over a year not only for filming on sets and exteriors, but also for the important post-production work involved in working on sound, digital effects, editing and everything that finalizes a film production. Something that is not minor considering how the MCU products have been questioned due to the urgency and level at which their effects have been presented.
