Deadpool is unique at Marvel Studios, both in his powers and in the way he connects with viewers
There’s just one month left until Deadpool and Wolverine hits theaters, the only Marvel movie in 2024 that will bring back the Merc with a Mouth and that will have a very clear objective: to drive viewers crazy with all kinds of sequences, including the classic breaking of the fourth wall.
However, if you’re hoping someone else can do it, we have bad news. Through an interview with the American media Vanity Fair, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that Deadpool will be the only one who will break the fourth wall in this third Mercenary with a Mouth film, and he has an explanation.
“There are rules. Very specific rules. You would lower the stakes of the movie if everyone – or even anyone else – was also aware of the fourth wall. Deadpool is the only character who has that ability. If everyone did, you wouldn’t be as invested in that character anymore. You really want to believe that the villain is a villain. You really want to believe that your co-star’s character is a villain, too. Deadpool can – and does – undermine that because you don’t want the audience to take him too seriously.”
Reynolds makes it clear that this “superpower” is only possessed by Deadpooland if any other character were able to do it, the Merc with a Mouth would lose part of his unique essence, since there are very few superheroes who possess this unusual ability.
It is clear that the new Marvel Studios film will be one of the company’s most ambitious projects, since in addition to being a multiversal madness and the first approach of mutants to the MCU, it will also be the studio’s first +18 film. Deadpool and Wolverine will hit theaters around the world on July 25, 2025.
