‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’ opens in theaters on June 28, followed by a sequel in a month. The actor plans to make two more installments to complete a four-film franchise.

Kevin Costner has only directed five films and they all are westernsThe last film in which he was behind the camera was released 21 years ago and his return to the director’s chair is now and in style: with two installments of his ambitious saga.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1Costner’s new project, opens on June 28th in theaters. Its sequel, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2lands in theaters with only 31 days difference: the August 30th.

“I don’t need 4 houses”: Kevin Costner has mortgaged one of his homes to film his $100 million western saga

“I don’t need four houses”said the actor at Cannes, where he presented the first installment of the saga. “I will risk those houses to make my films. I want to leave those houses to my children, but my children will have to get on with their lives.”

TWO SUCCESS AND ONE FAILURE AS A DIRECTOR

Costner’s first time behind the camera was a huge success. Dancing with Wolves (1990), a film in which he also starred, won seven Oscarsincluding Best Picture and Best Director.

Costner’s second time as a director was in 1997 with Messenger of the future, a post-apocalyptic adventure neo-western. In this case, the result was a failure and critics reacted negatively. What’s more, he won five Razzie Awardswhich are the anti-Oscars.

The bad result of Messenger of the future did not diminish Costner, who directed Open Range in 2003. It is, of course, another western and, with this one, the performer triumphed again: Critics approved it and it was a box office success..

Now, the actor returns more than two decades after his last film as a director with his dream project. For it he has recruited a cast that includes names such as Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower and Sienna Miller.
