For me, this was the best film of 2022, a gem that will leave you thinking

There are movies that hit you straight in the heart with a sledgehammer. This is one of them, one of those films that slowly builds up a situation in which you know something is wrong and that it could explode, and, even if you wanted to stop it, you couldn’t. In this way, the film introduces us to a single-parent family on holiday in Mallorca, a father and his daughter enjoying their free time. What could go wrong? Well, the truth is that there are quite a few aspects that draw attention in this regard, so we are going to talk at length about this film.

A summer vacation

Sophie is a grown woman who reflects on a vacation period he had with his father in Mallorca about twenty years ago. It is a time that she remembers with genuine affection, even though a long time has passed. Thus, halfway between a dreamlike and a real journey, Sophie relives those stories with the intention of forgive his father once and for all for the time they have not been able to spend together.

With this argument, Aftersun It is one of the most interesting films we can see within the dramatic genre, in fact, it is a truly heartbreaking story, even if it doesn’t show it at first.

The truth is that, apart from the sensitive subject matter that the film deals with, we find that it is a film that makes you love it. It’s slow, thoughtful and makes you feel inside the film all the time. In addition, it has that old, nostalgic touch, while at the same time it makes you feel that something is not going well. At least not as good as it should be for a father-daughter vacation.

Then comes the end and it will leave you thinking and reflecting for a while about the importance of the small details to understand everything. And it is not surprising, since it is really based on the own life stories of its director, Charlotte Wells, who with this work really made what, for me, is the best film of 2022 by far. It has become my favorite of that year and it is no wonder.

We can say very little about Charlotte Wells, since this is her debut in the feature film format, but it is clear that we have one of those directors in the making with a innate sensitivity to filming.

The performances also deserve a special place when talking about the film. Paul Mescal is superb in the role of him and you soon realize that things are not going well with him. You start to see it differently, but Francesca Corio’s performance is also out of the norm, since she is like a fish in water in a role that It’s pretty hard if you think about it twice.. Thus, we are faced with one of the best dramatic films that we can find, since it does not even delve directly into it, but rather leaves you reflecting on the issues it addresses.
