MEXICO CITY, April 20 (EL UNIVERSAL).- Since one in the afternoon, numerous fans gathered to witness the sound check of the New York band Interpol, willing to tolerate the persistent heat that was still felt in the City of Mexico.
As the afternoon progressed, the temperature dropped, accompanied by the arrival of rain. However, the public resisted in order to enjoy their favorite group up close, despite it being a band that visits the country on a recurring basis.
The last Interpol concert in the capital took place in 2023, within the framework of The World Is a Vampire festival, with a cost between $1,280 and $4,136 per person.
In the Plaza de la Constitución, the terraces that surround the esplanade offer a panoramic view of the space, which extends from the stage in front of the cathedral to the National Palace. Access to them costs 3,000 pesos to witness the free American event from this privileged location.
“It’s an exaggeration. You spend the same as at a festival or a live concert by any other artist just to go up to a terrace and have a drink. In any case, we are the same distance from below,” says Alejandro, an Interpol fan.
According to one of the saleswomen who approaches concert-goers, the price includes a full dinner and three drinks. However, most prefer to carry their own liquids and wait sitting on the asphalt.
In addition, for those who want to enjoy an alcoholic drink, despite not being allowed to enter with them, there are vendors who hang around while the public waits, offering cigarettes and beer. “How many chela, how many chelas, how much chela, how many chelas,” repeats a seller.
At 6:50, ten minutes before the time announced by the CDMX government, the opening band Water From Your Eyes took the stage, with experimental and dark sounds, while the rain threatened to fall again in the first frame of the capital.
