That the musical landscape has changed a lot in recent decades is an obvious truth. In line with the doomsayers who have been predicting a catastrophe for years, the leader of Deicide Glen Benton He did not hesitate to recently share his opinion on metal in 2024 and his point of view is certainly not very hopeful: “All we have is a bunch of guys who look like Weezer wannabes”.

In a recent interview with Francisco Zamudio of Knac.com, Benton He remembered the first bands that encouraged him to play death metal and when he made that decision: “When I was little, man, I remember, I even have it in my files upstairs in boxes. They asked me when I was little, when I was 11, 12 years old or whatever, they asked me what I wanted to be. And I put exactly what the hell I am now. So I had a long-term goal, man. Even when I was a kid, that’s what I wanted to do”.

During his musical education, he did not close himself to any style: “I grew up watching bands and listening to all kinds of music. I was exposed to music from a very young age. My uncle was a drummer. He had guitars hidden in the closet all the time, and I was surrounded by that. And it’s not like dad did it for me, but when he was little and I heard Black Sabbath for the first time, it was all decided… I really decided, man. I remember being at the breakfast table at 7:30 in the morning with my radio blasting “Paranoid” to my mother… I was a big fan of Black Sabbath, Dio and that era of metal, when There was Judas Priest and all that stuff from that time, man”.

The state of the metal in 2024, on the other hand, does not convince him: “Metal was metal then. Metal today has so many subcategories it’s ridiculous. I understand individualism and all that, and we could use a lot more leaders like Ozzy, Ronnie and all those people, Lemmy and all that. We don’t have that anymore. All we have is a bunch of guys who look like Weezer wannabes trying to play metal. Everyone wears black-rimmed glasses and trucker hats. Nobody gives a shit about image, looking like a metalhead and all that. I walk 24 hours a day looking like that. I can’t shake it off. I’m never going to fall for that. I’ve always been like that, too, with guys on stage, man. You’re not going to go out there in a fucking plaid shirt and white sneakers. That’s not gonna happen”.

Deicide recently launched ‘Banished By Sin’, an album with which they returned to their fierce roots. You can get the disk in this link.
