Pixies have been in the news this year for their new line-up change. Paz Lechantin, his bassist for a decade, announced her departure from the band last March. In her place came Emma Richardson, also a member of Band of Skulls.
A few months later, Pixies have new music to present to the world. Specifically, two new recordings. It is an original composition, ‘You’re So Impatient’ and then a cover of the vintage pop classic ‘Que sera sera’, popularized by Doris Day.
‘You’re So Impatient’ is a punk-rock shot that ends in a sigh, as it barely exceeds two minutes in length. ‘You’re So Impatient’ ends as the girl in the lyrics finishes “eating her ice cream.” The electric energy of Pixies does not let up at any time, in this curious story of a date in a “dead mall.” Pixies, lost in liminal space.
In their adaptation of ‘Que sera sera’, Pixies reformulates Doris Day’s classic, transforming it into something similar to a Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds murder ballad. It makes sense: Pixies have recorded ‘Que sera sera’ for the soundtrack of the horror series ‘From’.
Lately, Pixies have been on the lips of many following the death of Steve Albini, an engineer who worked with the band on their classic album, ‘Surfer Rosa’. Their latest album, ‘Doggerel’, was released in 2022.
