General Motors, one of the most important car companies in the world, confirmed this week that it officially closed its Colmotores plant in Colombia. The company assured that the assembly plant stopped working as of Friday, April 26.
“Operations will transition to a national marketing company model, supported by exceptional customer experience and after-sales services. Manufacturing operations will cease at the Colmotores de Colombia plant and the dismantling process began today with a small team. At the OBB plant in Ecuador, manufacturing will cease at the end of August 2024″, he specified.
Santiago Chamorro, general director of General Motors in South America, explained why they decided to close the Colmotores plant and stressed that the company determined to change the business model they had to strengthen themselves in the Colombian and Ecuadorian market.
Likewise, the manager spoke about the employees who are being laid off en masse this week and promised that they will be liquidated above the legal requirements. Likewise, he said that they will offer them a job relocation program.
“After careful evaluation, We decided that the national company model focused on the marketing of vehicles and focused on the customer is the right path to compete in Ecuador and Colombia in the future,” Chamorro initially stated.

The ministry indicated that it will convene a social dialogue table with the parties to review the underlying situation and study the best solutions for the workers, who are estimated to be close to 800.
