Pope Francis appointed the titular archbishop of Skálholt, Monsignor Antoine Camilleri, as apostolic nuncio to Cuba, the Vatican reported this Monday.

Camilleri, 58 years old, currently serves as apostolic nuncio in Ethiopia, as well as representing the Holy See before the African Union and as apostolic delegate in Somalia.

The monsignor was born in Sliema, Malta, on August 20, 1965, he has been a priest since 1991 and has a degree in Jurisprudence and Canon Law.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on January 9, 1999 and in recent years has worked in the pontifical representations in Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Cuba, according to a note from the Vatican press office.

Camilleri also worked in the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State, where Pope Benedict XVI had appointed him undersecretary on February 22, 2013.

On September 3, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him titular archbishop of Skálholt and apostolic nuncio and on October 4 of that year he received episcopal ordination.

On the following October 31, he was appointed apostolic nuncio in Ethiopia and Djibouti, special representative to the African Union and apostolic delegate in Somalia.

Monsignor Camilleri speaks seven languages: Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian and Russian.
