Mahamat expressed in his message on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the founding of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) in this capital by 32 heads of State, currently AU, that African intellectual, scientific and cultural resources were diversified and enriched immensely .

“Africa’s economy has grown at a rate envied by many parts of the world. “His resilience during the global Covid-19 crisis impressed many, appreciating the contribution of the Africa CDC (Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) to a successful response to the pandemic,” he said.

He recognized that Africa’s population explosion, its social limitations resistant to the demands of the new world, the continuous deterioration of climatic conditions, the various forms of foreign interference in its internal affairs have not contributed to these advances.

Likewise, the evident deficiencies in terms of governance that threaten the transformation of the aforementioned positive assets into factors of social justice, equality and inclusive prosperity.

“The Africa Day that we celebrate today is undoubtedly, as I often say, an opportune moment for reflection, to evaluate how far we have come, but also to reflect on the path that remains to be followed,” he stressed.

In addition to addressing governments and official institutions, he made a point in his speech towards the youth and women of the African continent in which he stressed that liberation and progress in development and integration are now a reality.

“This has been the result of the vision and leadership of the founding fathers and current leaders, but also and above all, of their mobilization of hundreds of millions of people across the continent, of their numerous sacrifices and of their unwavering resistance to ensure that the sun shines and warms the planet Africa,” he emphasized.

He recalled that the increase in mobilization and coherent struggles are the solution to the crises in some African countries, terrorism, the degradation of the natural environment, youth and female unemployment, migration, the decline of democratic values and unconstitutional changes of government.

He considered that the OAU is now at a true crossroads, hence the need to reform itself with determination and courage to become a powerful lever “of liberation, integration and the defense of African dignity in relation to ourselves, but also in relation to others.”
