Google announced this Tuesday that chose Brazilwhere near two cell phones are stolen every minuteto test a technology that uses artificial intelligence to automatically lock Android smartphones in case of theft.

“The feedback from Brazilian users inspired these (Android) anti-theft functions and the country will be the first to test them,” explained Fabio Coelho, director of Google in Brazil, in an article published on the platform.

The first version will be available for Brazilian users starting in July.

The main novelty consists of a system that “uses artificial intelligence to detect” a sudden movement that indicates a theft and automatically lock the screen, Google explained.

“If a movement associated with a theft is detected, the phone screen will be quickly locked to prevent thieves from easily accessing your data,” added the American giant.

Another innovation announced is the possibility of Lock access to device data remotely without passwordusing only the phone number.

There is also a function that allows you to do this blocking even without the device being connected to the Internet.

Apple, Google’s main competitor for mobile phone operating systems, had launched anti-theft features for its iOS system in January.

According to the most recent data from the NGO Public Security Forum, Brazil registered nearly one million cell phone thefts in 2022, that is, 1.9 per minute. This figure is equivalent to an increase of 16.6% compared to 2021.

The problem mainly affects residents of large cities such as Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, where last year the “bicycle gang” multiplied phone thefts committed by individuals on two wheels.
