Prensa Latina in Santiago de Cuba commitment and continuity (+Photos)

The Santiago chapter in the 65 years of Prensa Latina has its place in that history, a contribution that the protagonists themselves will describe.

Martha Cabrales, a journalist with extensive experience in various media in the eastern provinces, recalled: “21 years of my life, the culmination of my work career until my retirement were in Prensa Latina, a very fruitful stage, with many challenges, for the first time. I was writing for an international agency which required me to change the language of my texts.

“I had to learn it as I went, because I knew that they could read me anywhere in the world, and, furthermore, as a representative from Santiago de Cuba of an institution with so much history and prestige, I could not fail.”

Yordanka Ríos, specialist in Economic Management, all her working life at Prensa Latina: “I started here in 2003, a year after establishing the delegation, until now it is my only work center, my professional growth has been very great and that I have to I would like to thank people that I cannot fail to mention such as Denia Cala (former commercial specialist), Isaac Zamora (correspondent and first delegate) and Martha Cabrales.

“In the current group I also feel very good, our delegate Cándido Núñez is a teacher, a companion, a father and as far as I am concerned I am still here and as long as Prensa Latina exists in Santiago I will be here.”

Professor Omar Álvarez, as a delegate, led the transition in Santiago de Cuba from a purely journalistic correspondent to having a strong commercial component.

“When we arrived here the first thing we tried was to accompany Martha, who is an institution in journalism in the region and beyond, which constituted the beginning of the consolidation of the delegation, therefore the journalistic part was not a concern but a learning experience,” he highlighted.

Then it was complicated to move to the commercial part, but with the help of a joint diagnosis with the Communication and Journalism department of the Universidad de Oriente, we not only moved forward, but we were National Vanguard from 2009 to 2014, he highlighted. .

«That was the result of teamwork; I think that in updating the media management model you can learn in this agency because there is a lot of experience.”

Cándido Núñez, with an artistic vocation and extensive professional career as a political figure, is currently the delegate of Prensa Latina Oriente Sur:

“For me it has been an honor and a great challenge to lead the delegation of an Agency that is turning 65 years old, and that today in different situations maintains its founding objective: to be the alternative to the capitalist media that attacks the left in the world.

“This delegation has based its fundamental activity, first on the information part, for which it has counted on excellent journalists such as the aforementioned Isaac Zamora and Martha Cabrales and Carlos Negret, who was a journalist before he established himself as such.

The other activity is commercial, which does not escape the difficulties that the country has, the scenario has changed but we are working to close the first half of the year with positive results, he noted.

When I arrived at Prensa Latina I had no previous experience in the media, but I have had the help of many colleagues, Núñez acknowledged.

“Omar became my teacher, I learned from Martha, from Yordanka and on a day like today I am pleased to thank everyone who was here and those today, who are taking on the challenge of being continuity.”
