Huawei has taken a big step to forget about Android forever. HarmonyOS Next is a reality

A few months ago we had news about HarmonyOS Next, one of the most important steps in the history of Huawei software. A few years ago, after the US veto, Huawei introduced HarmonyOS as an alternative “own operating system” to Android. The problem? No matter how much the terminology changed, HarmonyOS was still Android.

This changes completely with HarmonyOS Next, a system that doesn’t even support .APK files. According to Huawei, this is its own development, with a Huawei SDK and developed under open source.

A new era begins for Huawei

The day has come. The beta of HarmonyOS Next is a reality in China, and along with it comes a small dart for Apple: Huawei Intelligence. You can already imagine where the shots are going.

After leaks and rumors, HarmonyOS Next is a reality. This is the first beta version of Huawei’s great plan to forget about Android. A proprietary operating system independent of Google’s AOSP, with its own kernel, SDK and AI model. The system is especially focused on the interconnection between the different Huawei devices, and the company wants to create its own and independent ecosystem.

Saying goodbye to Linux to embrace what Huawei has called Open Harmony. All components, according to the company, are self-developed and up to three times more efficient than Linux. As they have been saying for years, the main store will be the App Gallery.

Regarding previous versions of HarmonyOS, The system promises to be 30% more efficient in terms of performance. It also promises to be up to three times faster when connecting to other devices in the ecosystem, and 20% more energy efficient. But performance and efficiency are only a small part of the pie – the key here is AI.

Along with the HarmonyOS Next beta arrives Huawei Intelligence, Huawei’s artificial intelligence. The Chinese giant’s phones will be able to generate images using AI, will have improvements in the Celia assistant, and will combine both cloud functions and local executions. There are no in-depth details, but Huawei’s plan when it comes to integrating its own AI model is more than ambitious.

HarmonyOS Next, in principle, is a system designed for China. In Europe the bet is an alliance with Aurora Store, an app that allows you to enjoy the Google services framework and all the apps necessary for the average user.
