Colombia proved that it is a favourite in the Copa America. It beat Costa Rica 3-0 and qualified for the quarter-finals. It is the leader of Group D, ahead of Brazil, and is positioned as a candidate to compete for the title.
After Costa Rica built a wall against Brazil, eyes were on Colombia, which can play short just like Brazil did. On the other hand, the Colombians, still with high possession, this time proposed a different game, more vertical, with long passes, and effective. The result is eloquent: the Costa Rican wall did not hold. Colombia went over with great goals.
The first goal was scored by Luis Díaz via penalty, at 31 minutes. Lucho was the star of the match.
Dávinson Sánchez added to the lead in the 59th minute with a header assisted by Jhon Arias. Headers have been the most accurate scoring method for Colombians in this tournament.
And Jhon Córdoba scored the third in the 62nd minute with a pass from James Rodríguez, the team leader. A great goal.
When they put the accelerator on, the Colombian team is infallible: the speed of its players has been lethal in the Copa América.
The Costa Ricans demanded very little from Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.
The coffee team reached 25 games undefeated: under the command of Néstor Lorenzo the Colombians do not know defeat and appear to be a solid team, with variations and offensive effectiveness. They have several scorers, the relays during the game work and they know how to maintain and extend the result.
Colombia will finish the group stage against Brazil, which is the strongest rival in theory, but which the coffee growers already knew how to beat in the South American qualifiers last November.
If Colombia finishes first in the group, they would surely avoid Uruguay in the quarterfinals and face Panama or the United States.

With this result, Colombia is in the quarterfinals
With Luis Díaz’s goal, Colombia’s partial victory has qualified them for the next phase: regardless of the results of the remaining matches, the 6 points they have are enough to advance.

This is how Colombia and Costa Rica arrive at the meeting
In a group as competitive as D in the Copa América, and after the tie between Ticos and Brazilians, all eyes are on this match on Friday, June 28. If it wins, Colombia would qualify for the quarterfinals and consolidate its growing favoritism, to reach the match with Brazil more calmly, which in theory is the most difficult rival in the group. Colombia has found in players like Richard Rios a revelation for its ideas and solidity of play and in recent games different players have scored: it does not depend on a single scorer.
But Costa Rica, #52 in the FIFA ranking, could surprise once again and debunk all the myths and predictions in this tournament. Although history is in favor of Colombia (11 games, 9 victories for Colombia and two for Costa Rica), Alfaro is an executioner of the Colombians. In the last qualifying round, Alfaro’s Ecuador beat Colombia 6-1. Alfaro, who has been a sports commentator for television channels in Colombia, knows the coffee players and is a coach with experience in large tournaments. One of the leaders of the Ticos is Juan Pablo Vargas, a Millonarios player, who also knows the Colombians well.
