The Interior minister of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, said Wednesday that the operation for which the Venezuelan opponents who had been held since March 2024 at the Argentine Embassy in Caracas have been the result of a “negotiation”.
“They said that it was an extraordinary operation. Those who more or less say that it was based on a negotiation. The one who says there was no negotiation is because they left him out in the negotiation,” he said in his program on the state television network VTV, referring to the US and Argentine authorities, who described the “rescue” operation.
Cabello has defended that those held were there for their own will, implying that everything was part of a victimization campaign and that the government did not seek to stop these people. “The permanence of those people in that embassy depended on them. We did not get there. They were offered within the epic that three days were going to take them out with the marines,” he said.
He also stated that the opposition leader María Corina Machado would have participated in the negotiation and that within it was the exit of the mother of the mother of the leader of the Vente Venezuela party.

The minister has argued that only four people were in the Argentine embassy and, therefore, there are only four people who have arrived in the United States from Venezuela.
“The five hostages of the Argentine Embassy. It is already the first lie. There were not five there. There were only four. Since August 20 there are only four,” he confirmed on television.
In this regard, he reported that on August 20 one of the hostages, Claudia Macero, left the building “on his own”, contradicting the information of the US authorities who speak of five released opponents.
Likewise, Cabello has made reference to the departure of the embassy in December 2024 by Fernando Martínez Mottola, who after this was retained under house arrest and died in February 2025. “And where did Martínez Mottola left? For his house because it was a show what they had,” he added.
