The Chilean association of desalination and reuse (ACCIs) has allied with the Minera Plusmining consultant to develop a report on the production and transport of water in copper mining in Chile. The report will be based on primary sources and analyze aspects such as investments in desalination plants and operational costs. This collaboration seeks to better understand the use of unconventional water sources in the mining sector.
Generating strategic information about the use of water in copper mining
The Chilean association of desalination and reuse (Acces) and the Minera Plusmining consultant have formalized a strategic alliance to develop a report that reflects key aspects of the production and transport of water in copper mining in Chile. This collaboration seeks to generate strategic information that allows better to understand the growing prominence of unconventional water sources, such as wastewater reuse and the use of seawater – desalted as saline – in the water supply of national mining.
The report will be based on primary sources that will provide precise information on the investments associated with the construction of desalination plants, water treatment and driving systems, as well as the operational costs of its operation. From this base, key metrics will be established that characterize the evolution of this infrastructure and its impact on copper production. The report will be published semiannually, allowing monitoring the tendencies of the sector and offering a reliable technical basis for analysis and decision making.
«This collaboration is relevant, since the synergy between mining and seawater constitutes a fundamental milestone for Chile. Mining has sustained the use of seawater in the national industry, today representing 36% of the water supply in mining operations, but the use of seawater will only increase opening new opportunities for Chile, ”said Juan Carlos Guajardo, executive director of Plusmining.
Key collaboration to understand the challenges and opportunities for the use of unconventional water sources
Within the framework of this initiative, it is expected to have the collaboration of mining companies that currently produce copper using unconventional water sources or that develop projects to incorporate them into their operations. Your experience will be key to consolidating a precise diagnosis and building a shared vision of the challenges and opportunities for the use of these sources in the mining sector.
«Mining has been a pioneer in the implementation of the water transition to unconventional water sources that allow it to achieve water security by reducing its dependence on continental sources. This is fundamental in a scenario marked by a growing variability in the availability of continental sources, especially in the basins of the central and north zone of the country, where mining activity is concentrated. Each drop of water from unconventional sources used reduces pressure on continental sources, favoring the preservation of ecosystems and a more sustainable management of the water resource, ”said Rafael Palacios, executive director of ACC.
The collaboration between Acces and Plusmining reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable development of the country and the generation of knowledge that allows to face the present and future challenges in the efficient use of the water resource in mining. The resulting report will be a fundamental tool to promote the adoption of more sustainable and efficient practices in the mining sector, thus contributing to the preservation of ecosystems and a responsible water management.
