To anyone’s surprise, Telcel is the largest mobile operator in Mexico. According to the data that América Móvil, Telcel’s mother, shared Tuesday, Telcel has a market share of 55%. In this aspect, perhaps the striking is to see that its quota has decreased since 58.7% registered at the end of 2023, according to figures of The CIUbut for anyone it is surprise that it is the market leader.
What is surprising is that Bait de Walmart steps on the heels of AT&T and Movistar. The OMV of the commercial chain already has 18.1 million subscribers, equivalent to 12% market shareaccording to data shared by América Móvil. With this percentage the difference with Movistar, its closest competitor, is only 2% share.
In number of subscribers, Movistar has 21.6 million, only 3.5 million more than Baitaccording to the report. This difference is the equivalent of the two percentage points of quota. AT&T is later from Bait, but not for much.
The report says that AT&T has 22.9 million subscribers in Mexico, equivalent to 15% market share. Compared to Bait numbers, there are 4.8 million users, and 3% higher market share. So, Telcel, AT&T, Movistar and Bait form the top 4 of telephone service providers in Mexico. The highlight here is that it is the first time that an OMV appears with figures so close to those of a traditional operator.
-This Bait growth trend has been a couple of years. The OMV closed 2024 with more than 15 million users, and now, just a few months later, records around 3 million more subscribers. Such has been its growth that Telcel has complained about “Preferential treatment” of the IFT. Meanwhile, Bait continues with its growth strategy, which includes more centers to buy cell phones on credit and even its first rental plans this year.
Bait’s ambition is huge: Sor objective for 2025 is to become the second operator of Mexicoonly after Telcel. Because of its growth rate and the little difference that now separates it from Movistar and AT&T, it is a goal that now seems very possible, more if the new telecommunications law benefits it.
The telecommunications market in Mexico is about to change very drastically. Telcel will continue on the throne, but AT&T and Movistar are the ones who will suffer from Bait’s success.
