The choice of squares to train medical and medical specialists (MIR) has started this Monday at the Ministry of Health between applause, nerves and tears of joy. The return, four years later, to the face -to -face process has brought together groups of friends and complete families who followed the assignment of positions per minute. “I was more nervous than the day of the exam,” admits Dionisio Villodres, who has just written his new beginning: dermatology at the Virgen de la Victoria hospital in Malaga. Until next May 28, 13,692 applicants will opt for 9,007 places of resident doctors, 3% more positions than in 2024.
“My son also wants in Valencia, I don’t know if he is going,” said a lady in a corrode of mothers and fathers who seemed more nervous than her children. “good luck, good luck,” said those who had already crossed, out of exit, the automatic door of the ministry to which they entered. Since 2020, as a consequence of the pandemic, the only way for the choice was electronic.
Those who choose this Monday are the first on the list, those who obtained a higher score in an exam that for the first time had no cut -off note to prevent vacancies. All candidates with a note greater than zero enter the choice wheel. It is a measure that the Autonomous Communities had requested, according to the Ministry, and is another tool to placate the difficulties that exist to cover 100% of the places offered.
In 2023 246 positions were deserted, all of family and community medicine. It is a specialty that offers four times more places than pediatrics, the next in number, recalls the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SEMFYC): “There are no 2,000 future residents who want to be pediatricians, internists, anesthesists or cardiologists. The speech of vacancies is not consistent with the statistical reality of the specialty and should be mentioned that there are thousands who do express interest in the specialty.” In this new edition, the offer of the MIR of Child and Adolescence Psychiatry has increased by 60%; of legal and forensic medicine in 42% and oral and maxillofacial surgery (14%).
Lidia González has chosen plastic, aesthetic and repairing surgery at the La Paz University Hospital. He has arrived from Galicia with enough guarantees that he could get the square he wanted. Only 40 people chose before her. “For me it has been an award for all these years of sacrifice. Now another way begins,” he says. Alejandro Rubio, with a more content air, has finished the process a while ago: the number 14 entered and will be a resident medical at the October 12 University Hospital. “I am very happy, I come to Madrid five years and extendable,” he says with a shy smile of satisfaction.
The choice of specialized health training places is not only limited to doctors and medical. On April 23, it started for psychologists (PIR) and pharmacists (FIR) with many difficulties due to an electrical failure that overheated and collapsed the infrastructure to choose vacancies. The beginning of the process was delayed hours. A week later, Spain registered an unprecedented blackout that also canceled the calls planned for that day.
