Eugenio Derbez He does not believe that Donald Trump applique Cinema tariffs made abroadbecause the industry would not allow it.
This morning, in the news of Ciro Gómez Leyva of Radio Formula, the actor and filmmaker of “No returns are accepted” stressed that more than putting obstacles to film productions, the US government should think about giving incentives to roll in their country.
On Sunday, through his social networks, Trump announced that he had instructed the competent authorities to put cinema tariffs produced abroadwith the aim of supporting the cinema made in its territory.
“The American film industry is dying quickly. Other countries offer all kinds of incentives to move our filmmakers and US studies away,” the president wrote.
“Therefore, I authorize the Department of Commerce and the US commercial representative to immediately start the process of establishing a 100 % tariff to all films that enter our country produced abroad. We want movies made in the United States, again!”
The little clarity has made it assume creatives from other countries, such as Mexico and France, that the measure would also affect their productions when they reach the US.
Derbez said he understands Trump’s concern, but it is not the path he must follow.
-“It is a really complex issue, I understand Trump’s concern, many productions have left the US in recent years, simply because it is cheaper to film in other countries because they offer generous incentives.
“In Los Angeles, in Hollywood, no one films because it is very expensive: it is filmed in Nuerva Orleans or Atlanta, in New Mexico and you can see the impact of fiscal credits, communities benefit economically. I understand that it causes discomfort, but the solution is not punishing putting tariffs, but putting tax incentives,” said Derbez.
He recalled that it would be a coup for productions whose history asks them to film in other countries, as has been the case of “impossible mission” or “James Bond.” Each story, he said, asks what to do around her.
Also, he said, it is unknown what would be the criteria to identify an American or foreign film, since there are several that are roll in other countries. He himself, with “radical”, could not apply to Mexican awards such as Ariel, because he had American capital, although he has filmed in Mexico and local talent.
Derbez considered that the announcement will only stay at that.
“I do not believe it will happen, that the industry allows it, because if they would affect, they would have to raise the costs of foreign films in the US, they would be double or triple at the box office for the simple fact of being foreigners,” he said.
