Camilo Escalona trajectory in the PS
Camilo Escalona began his political career at age 13 by joining the youth of the Socialist Party in 1969. During the government of Salvador Allende, he stood out as leader of the Federation of Secondary Students of Santiago (FESES). His activism led him to be elected president of the FESES in 1972 and a member of the Central Committee of Socialist Youth in 1973, he details the National Congress Library.
After the 1973 military coup, Escalona was persecuted by the Military Board and obtained political asylum at the Austria Embassy. He lived in Vienna, Cuba and the German Democratic Republic, from where he returned clandestinely to Chile in 1983. In 1984, already in hiding, he entered the PS Political Commission.
After the return to democracy, Escalona held multiple positions: he was vice president of the PS in 1992 and president in three different periods (1994-1998, 2001-2003 and 2006-2010). Its influence was consolidated as a key figure in the reorganization of socialism during the last decades.
