The tragedy that hit the Altavista district, in Medellín, left a deep mark on the community for the death of Yulieth Victoria Arboleda López, 37, and his son José Miguel Muñoz Arboleda, 13.
Both lost their lives in the early hours of Tuesday, April 29, when a sudden growing of La Guayabala ravine swept their home and dragged them by the violent current.

The situation worsened when José Miguel, who had managed to leave the house along with other relatives, returned to try to save his motherbeing both reached by the force of water.
According to Jaime Alexánder Muñoz’s story, Yulieth’s husband and father of José Miguel, the emergency began around 1:55 am, when the noise of the ravine, which had increased due to the rains, woke up to the family.

Although initially it looked like a water filtration, the situation climbed quickly when the current flooded the housereaching levels that reached their waist. In the midst of chaos, they tried to evacuate, but the force of water blocked the outputs, leaving Yulieth and his son trapped.

The woman’s body was found hours later, near the El Rodeo club, while José Miguel appeared the next day in the Carlos Lleras Restrepo hydroelectric plant, in the municipality of Barbosa, Antioquia, after having been dragged by kilometers through the ravine and the Medellín River.
Both bodies had multiple blows due to the strength of the current and the obstacles in their journey.
The family’s house, located on the San José del Manzanillo village, was seriously affected. The Administrative Department of Risk Management (DAGRD) declared the property at high risk and ordered its final evacuation.
The survivors, who suffered wounds and lacerations, are currently housed in family homes while looking for a place to relocate.

The mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez explained that the tragedy was caused by a slip in the upper part of the ravinewhat generated a dam and, subsequently, an avalanche that affected not only this family, but more than 40 homes in the corregimiento already 350 throughout the city.
Yulieth Victoria, who worked for 12 years at EPS Sura, was remembered for her relatives as a woman dedicated to her family and her work.
In recent months, he had been performing his work from home due to health problems. In addition to his role as a mother and wife, he was known for his passion for makeup, an activity he did in his free time for friends and neighbors.
For its part, José Miguel, eighth grade student in an educational institution in commune 16 (Bethlehem)was described as a cheerful young man, passionate about football and fervent national athletic fan.
“He was a very cheerful boy, he loved football. How many things he wanted to know about football, José told you in great detail. He enjoyed 500% football and was a national fan to die, so much that he enjoyed or cried with the games.”said Alexandra López, child’s cousin, The Colombian.

It was also part of the acolyite group of the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Stone, in Belén Rincón. His cousin, Alexandra López, highlighted his enthusiasm for sport, stating that he was able to speak in detail about any football related.
The bodies of Yulieth and José Miguel were veiled in the Cemetery Campos de Paz, and the funeral honors were carried out in the parish where the young man served as acolyte.
