After more than four months of being inaugurated, the new carcinology hospital in the Miramar neighborhood, in Zapopan, has already entered into functions. It has more areas of attention, but there is more support from the federal government in the delivery of cancer medicines, recognized Jalisco’s secretary of Health, Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez.
“We have asked that since the beginning of the year we could have the drugs for the attention of children and adults with cancer, because last year and this we had to make an extraordinary purchase of 170 million pesos. We couldn’t wait any longer.”
According to the Federal Ministry of Health, in Mexico around 195 thousand cases of this disease are diagnosed per year and 46% of patients die. Inegi’s figures verify it: malignant tumors were the third cause of death in the country last year, behind heart disease and diabetes.
In Jalisco There are two thousand 600 cases that are detected a year, but what worries the authorities is the increase in children and adolescents. According to Pérez Gómez, this disease has detonated in the entity at least 10 percent.
acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which affects the blood and bone marrow, is the most common type of cancer in the state: eight out of 10 minors suffer from it. In addition to genetics, environmental pollution influences this increase in cases.
“400 to 500 annual cases are detected in Jalisco. About three thousand children are in follow -up. The little ones must continue under observation for at least five years.”
On February 28, the Jalisco government delivered oncological medicines to cancer patients at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, at the Jalisco Institute of Cancerology and in the General Hospital of Zapopan or Zoquipan, in order to face the shortage that is nationwide.
With an investment of 248 million pesos, divided into the purchase of medicines and support from civil organizations, Governor Pablo Lemus said they could not wait for tenders from the Federationwhich would be ready at the end of March.
Last week, the Government of Mexico gave Jalisco a part of the agreed medications. “It is not yet all the supply, but seeing that it has already begun to be received generates a better expectation,” said Pérez Gómez.
Despite this, the Miramar Cancer Hospital doubled patient care compared to the previous headquarters, located in the El Retiro neighborhood, in Guadalajara. In addition, the number of beds was increased: from 43 to 100. In terms of operating rooms, it went from three to six.
-The budget for care patients with cancer
According to projections of the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that cancer cases will increase in the next 20 years in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, from 1 million 55 thousand patients in 2022 to 2 million 62 thousand in 2045. Despite this panorama, in Mexico the budget to attend this disease has been down since at least 2023, the last year of which you have registration.

The reduction in the budget for the care of cancer patients has rented in Jalisco, especially in the delivery of oncological medicines for children and adults with this condition, state secretary of health, Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez said. Because medicines have not been delivered in time since last year, the state government has bought its own medications, with an approximate expense of 170 million pesos.
Besides, Given the rise in cases of childhood cancer in Jalisco, the secretary made a call to work together among all institutions to provide medical care to all state patients.
“Childhood cancer has had an increase in the number of cases. When the possibilities of healing are timely detected, for example, in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the possibility of healing can reach up to 85% detecting in time and with timely treatment,” he added.
