The Santander University Hospital, Hus, reports over -occupation in the emergency department and ICU, asks to send mild cases to other centers and alert about the need to strengthen the hospital network to guarantee timely care.

The University Hospital of Santander, Hus, one of the main reference centers in the region, faces a critical situation of hospital occupation. As reported by José Orlando Quintero Correa, director of the medical sub -management of the institution, the adult emergency service currently operates above their capacity, while the neonatal, intermediate and basic intensive care units register a 100 %occupation.
Given this panorama, Quintero Correa made an urgent call to the departmental public network, to the Emergency and Emergencies Regulatory Center (CRUE) and the entities responsible for the transfer of patients, to optimize the use of hospital resources available in the region.

“It is essential that cases that are not so serious are referred to institutions of medium and low complexity, to ensure that those who truly require highly complex services can access the HUS in a timely manner,” he emphasized.
The situation reflects a recurring phenomenon in the main hospitals of the country, where the lack of adequate classification and reference of patients derives in the congestion of critical services.

Experts point out that strengthening the primary care network and decentralizing certain services is essential to decongest the large care centers and guarantee continuity in specialized medical care.
Meanwhile, in the HUS, medical and administrative staff works to counterreloj to meet the high demand, in an effort to maintain the quality and opportunity in the care of the most vulnerable patients.
