Dr. Mallorquina Elisabeth Coll, recognized for its contribution in the field of donation and transplantation of organs at national and international level, has participated in GLODS consultations of the WHO and in work groups of the European Commission. This Mineroocles intervenes in the afternoon in the colloquium organized by the Social Consell of the UIB and Movimimento Europeu on models of transplant organization in Europe along with Julio Velasco, coordinator of transplants in Son Espases.
What aspects will your intervention focus?
—My intention is to talk about the transplant organization model in Spain. In Europe it is quite similar although each country has to adapt this organization to its health system. In this sense, I have to emphasize that we have helped improve their procedures to several European countries. In Spain we are referents, they consult and imitate us.
What makes us different?
—The organizational measures, the level of coordination that we have, at the national, autonomous level and within each hospital, and the fact of having a high quality universal public health system that strengthens us. We have very well trained professionals and we have achieved that intensive care units consider donation as part of their work. In addition, great training is performed at all hospital levels, to also encourage that if a patient dies in the plant, this possibility can be offered to their relatives. In this sense, we must value the involvement and work carried out by the transplant coordinators in hospitals.
“Son Espases is among the top ten puts in organ donation”
-
We are leaders in donation.
– From the year 92 we are world leaders. In Germany, for example, they have less than half of the donors that we have given more strength to the scope of transplantation than to the donation. And for this activity it is essential to motivate and have the population.
In Spain there is consciousness.
“In general, we are in the average of Europe.” More than half of the population, 60 % say yes and we have less than 20 % negative. In this sense, how well prepared our professionals are and the fact that in our country you have access to an equitable transplant, wherever you are, everything adds.
Each donation involves the activation of numerous resources.
—It is a perfect machinery, there may be up to one hundred professionals involved in a transplant, if it is a multiorgan donor, counterreloj is worked. In the islands, air operations are fundamental and many times we have to ask for help from airports, which open us at night if the case is. The airlines also collaborate, which free of charge make the rear -for transport, which are more durability organs that can travel alone on commercial flights. The answer is very positive.
How are we in the Balearic Islands regarding donation and transplantation?
—The donation level, Balearic Islands is always in the high middle part of the table and Son Espases is among the top 10 hospitals in Spain. Regarding transplantation, the implementation of liver transplantation was more than justified because you avoid patient displacements.
