Reading is an ally for mental well -being and cognitive impairment prevention

“One of the greatest benefits of reading is its impact on brain plasticity, the ability of the brain to create and strengthen neuronal connections. It is a mental that stimulates the of new connections, enhancing cognitive agility even in adulthood. When reading, we exercise abstraction and analysis, which is beneficial to prevent cognitive deterioration,” said the specialist.

“Reduce the stress”

According to the Ministry of Culture of Barcelona, ​​51.2 % of the population is considered a frequent reading.

This data becomes relevant in a context in which the consumption of digital content fragments attention, while books sustained concentration and strengthen working memory.

A study by the University of Sussex (United Kingdom) revealed that only six minutes of reading are enough to reduce stress by 68 %.

The research analyzed physiological and psychological parameters of volunteers before and after reading, positioning this activity as one of the most effective to achieve relaxation, even above listening to music or taking a walk.

In that line, Silvia Mérida Expósito, Blua Sanitas psychologist, stressed that reading is a healthy alternative against hyperconnection caused by the constant use of devices.

“When choosing a book, sustained attention is favored and working memory is improved, key aspects to maintain emotional and cognitive balance,” he said.

In addition, he said that reading reduces cortisol levels, stress hormone, and promotes a sensation of well -being.

Mérida Expósito also pointed out that reading improves emotional self -regulation, by facilitating the understanding and management of their own and other people’s emotions, something fundamental in an environment of high digital stimulation.

Sanitas experts reiterated the importance of promoting reading from an early age to stimulate positive and conscious brain development.
