Nutrition during the first years of life constitutes a fundamental pillar for the integral development of childhood. In that sense, Dos Pinos held the conference “Impact of nutrients in children from 1 to 3 years”. The activity was attended by Dr. Flor de María Ramírez Ortíz, recognized pediatric gastroenterologist, who shared essential knowledge about adequate food in this critical stage of growth.
During her speech, Dr. Ramírez Ortíz stressed that the first 2 thousand days (equivalent to just over five years) are decisive to establish the basis of physical, cognitive and emotional development. That is why adequate nutrition in this period directly impacts the Health and growth of children.
However, the nutritional situation in Guatemala continues to be worrying. According to data from the National Maternal Health Survey (ESMI 2015), 46.5% of children under five have chronic malnutrition, while 32.4% suffer from anemia. To this is added the so -called “double burden” of malnutrition, which combines overweight nutritional deficiencies in 20.7% of the child population (DISC, 2015).
“Malnutrition does not always occur as low weight or size. hunger hunger, product of the lack of essential micronutrients, can even manifest in children with adequate or overweight weight. Therefore, it is crucial to educate families about the quality of food, especially between 12 and 36 months of age,” the specialist emphasized.
Nutritional requirements in early childhood
In this stage of accelerated growth, children require approximately 1,300 kilocalories daily. This contribution must come from a balanced diet that includes complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and high quality proteins. It is also essential to guarantee the consumption of micronutrients such as iron, calcium, zinc and vitamins A, C, D and complex B.
Dr. Ramírez Ortíz recalled that the stomach of a small child is much smaller than that of an adult, so it is necessary to offer dense foods in nutrients and in adequate portions. A varied diet, based on houses prepared at home and distributed in three times of food and two spare parts, is essential to meet their needs.
The recommended drinks for this stage are water and cow’s milk without modifications. In cases where breastfeeding continues, it remains an essential source of energy and immunological defenses.
The role of two pines in food preparations
In the second part of the conference, the relevance of food preparations as strategic allies to complement the diet of children between 1 and 3 years, especially in contexts where nutritional deficiencies persist.
