In 1934, German composer Carl Orff found the Carmina Buranaa series of medieval poems authorsThe eleventh and twelfth century.
Based on these texts, which reflect on issues such as destiny and fortune, the artist composed one of the most relevant cantatas of the twentieth century, which will be played on May 9 and 10 at the Metropolitan Theater for more than 300 musicians. The Iberacademy orchestra, the EAFIT Symphony Orchestra and the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra will join 10 choirs and three soloists to interpret this work.

The address will be in charge of Maestro Alejandro Posada, the first Colombian in history to be appointed director of a European Professional Orchestra.
“Carmina Burana is one of those emblematic works of the musical repertoire. I would dare to call her unique. It is not the most important of all, But one of the greats. Carl Orff dedicated his life to exploring the rhythm contained in the words; For him, music was not only sound, but also drama. He said that the word has internal rhythm and that this rhythm should become music, ”explains Posada on the cantata, which the teacher explains that he has directed multiple times in different parts of the world.
-However, this work appears in Medellín every time those institutions that are part of the city’s ecosystem – and even the country – show their ability to articulate and work as a team. Therefore, in addition to the participation of the three professional orchestras, Carmina Burana will be interpreted by The National Choir of Colombia, the Choir Voces Dark of Medellín and the Vocal Ensemble of Medellín. They will also join three choirs of educational institutions of the city and the soprano Sandra Lorena Caicedo, the tenor Juan José Lopera and the baritone Carlos López.
Despite his extensive experience as a director, Posada ensures that the assembly of this work does not cease to have challenges. “I would call this version a Carmina Burana With purpose. Sometimes one, as director or manager of orchestra, program concerts by routine. But this time, there is a major objective: build lasting alliances between institutions and strengthen the city’s musical ecosystem […] More than 40 municipalities are involved. All this implies logistics and artistic challenges, from coordinating essays to balance the levels of different choirs, many of them fans or students, ”he says.
And this concert will have special guests: these are the children who are part of the music schools of Guatapé, Guarne and Copacabana.
The objective is that on May 9 at 8:00 pm and May 10 at 6:00 pm the public is witnessing the “solidity” – according to the words of Posada – of the Medellín musical ecosystem, which is working for the future of the city from music.
