New York, May 6 (EFE) .- The toy Mattel plans to raise the prices of its products in the United States due to the Donald Trump’s government tariff policy and will also diversify its supply chain to depend less on China, according to its main executive, Ynon Kreiz, to CNBC on Tuesday.
These two initiatives to “mitigate” the effect of tariffs are known precisely days after Trump removed iron from a possible recession in the country saying “perhaps children will have two wrists instead of thirty, and perhaps the two dolls will cost a couple more than normal.”
Mattel, who manufactures the Barbie doll, disclosed on Monday that his losses almost tripled in the first quarter, up to 40 million dollars, and withdrew his forecasts for this year citing the “volatile macroeconomic environment and the changing tariff situation in the US”.
In a statement, the firm said that US tariffs did not affect their figures in this period but is already taking measures to compensate for its impact, including raising the price in the US, although it expects about half of its products to be worth “20 dollars or less” in stores.
-Mattel also expects to “optimize the supply of products” with special attention to China, a country to which the US imposes tariffs of 145 % in general, and specifically the company plans to reduce its imports from the Asian giant to 15 % in 2026, indicates in a presentation.
In his interview with CNBC today, however, Executive Kreiz ruled out that all the production of the company will move to the United States, one of the objectives in which Trump justifies his tariff policy.
“Design, development, product engineering and brand management takes place in the United States. Making the product in other countries allows us to create quality products with affordable starting prices,” Kreiz added.
