The Liberal of Prime Mark Carney secured the victory in the federal elections held on Monday in Canada and were marked by the threats of annexation of US President Donald Trump and his commercial .

With more than 95% of the votes, the liberals have made 43.4% of the votes, while the Pierre Poilievre conservative party has achieved 41.5%.

Meanwhile, 6.5% of the votes went to the sovereign cheese , 6.2% to NDP social democrats and 1.2% to the Green Party.

It is not yet clear if the liberal party will ensure the absolute majority in Parliament – at least 172 seats – or if you will need one or more minor formations to form .

“Who is willing to defend Canada with me?” He said Carney in the early hours of Tuesday before his supporters at the headquarters of the Liberal Party in Ottawa, Ontario, the speech in which he was proclaimed winner.

“And who is prepared to build a Canada?” He continued, before the cheers of those present. “It’s fine, we have solved it.”

The polls already pointed to an advantage for the liberals in the final stretch of the campaign, after months showing the conservatives to the , with up to 20 points of difference.

The turn took place at the beginning of 2025, when a series of events that disrupted the Canadian landscape occurred: the resignation of Justin Trudeau, the subsequent appointment of Carney as leader of the liberals and prime minister; and Trump’s to the White House with the consequent threats and tariffs.

Carney hardly waited a month after being appointed prime minister to call early elections and an order to Trump, crying out the end of the “special relationship” that united both countries for decades.

With a long career in banking and global finance behind the back but novice in politics, during the campaign the liberal leader introduced himself as the best alternative to deal with the combative American president and lead the country to fruition through the and social problems that dragged before.

His speech after the victory has not deferred much of his words in the campaign.

“As I have been for months, the United States wants our land, our resources, our water,” Carney told an enraged audience.

“President Trump is trying to break us to be able to take over us, but that will never happen,” he added.

And he said that he and the US president will discuss “the future of two sovereign and nations” in the next few days.

He also spoke of his intention to strengthen associations with other countries, including those of Europe.

“If the United States no longer wants to be at the forefront of world leadership, Canada will be,” he added.

He also warned that Canada will face difficult challenges, and that “important changes always generate concern,” although he clarified that he fully trusts his country.

“Because Canada is more than a : we are and always be a federation,” he added, and promised that his government will “with all the provinces and all territories.”

“We are not always perfect, but we strive to be ,” he said.

Minutes before his speech, his main rival appeared before the to congratulate him for his victory.

“We have to learn tonight’s lessons so we can have an even better the next Canadians decide the future of the country,” he said.

An escape valve

“I am very impressed by the stability and seriousness of Mark Carney’s approach,” Mike Brennan, a voter of Kitchener, ondue, told the BBC, while rowing the liberal leader in a cafeteria in Cambridge, an hour from Toronto.

Brennan, who described himself as a “liberal lifetime”, had initially resigned to support formation due to his Trudeau aversion.

Examples such as yours reinforce the thesis of Shachi Kurl, president of the Angus Reid Institute, an organization that studies changes in public opinion of the country.

As BBC told the BBC, Trudeau’s resignation, who became increasingly unpopular in the decade that was in power, meant “opening a huge valve to release pressure.”

“All angry liberals who were willing to vote for the NDP (leftist) or the conservatives began to join,” Kurl explained to the BBC.

And Trump, “the main protagonist of these elections,” made more Canadians who considered themselves liberal but were unhappy and other progressive voters decided to support Carney.

“The threats, the speech about annexation, all became a great motivator for the center and left voters to” go to the polls.

Gray line

A triumph that was possible, in part, by Trump

Analysis of Anthony Zurcher, correspondent for North of the BBC

It is projected that Mark Carny and the Liberal Party will achieve most in Canadian elections, and it seems that they will do it thanks to a great help from Donald Trump.

The constant harassment of the US president to his northern neighbor agreed with a dramatic of fortune for the Liberal Party. But no one should expect the liberals to thank him or that Trump softens his rhetoric, although month he said he preferred a liberal prime minister.

On the contrary, the most likely result is that now more of the same comes: more scathing jokes about the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st in the United States, more threats related to the commercial war in and a greater will to question the ties and agreements that join both neighboring countries.

Although it does not seem that Trump dislikes both Carney and his predecessor, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, his political interests and those of Canada seem to be destined to continue diverging.

There are already indications that Canada is looking towards Europe as a more reliable partner than Trump’s US, a movement that will surely irritate the US leader.

Carbyy awaits a formidable challenge when installed in office after a relatively sudden ascent in Canadian politics.

Expert technocrat in managing crisis

Carney has a unusual curriculum for a politician who must one of the world’s greatest economies.

He is the first chief of his country’s executive who was not a legislator before. Nor did he hold any government position before succeeding Trudeau as prime minister.

However, he has several milestones in his previous career.

Formed in Harvard and Oxford, he was the first non -British to become governor of the Bank of England in the more than 300 years of history of that institution when he assumed the position in 2013, in the time of Brexit.

He came to it after guiding his country through the great recession of 2008 as governor of the Bank of Canada.

That experience in the management of international economic crises became his greatest asset in the electoral campaign and made his lack of experience in politics not an inconvenience for those who supported him.

He also capitalized his position against Trump, which summarizes the slogan of his party: Fuerte Canada.

“I know that these are dark times. Dark times brought by a country in which we can no longer trust,” Car came out.

Thus, his main campaign promise was to win the commercial war promoted by the president of the neighboring country and maintain the Canadian economy afloat.

Although he also said that he would limit the size of the federal government, liberalize within Canada and “ensure borders,” in line with one of Trump’s priorities.

On the other hand, he campaigned in favor of sustainability, although he assumed a more moderate position than Trudeau by eliminating the carbon emissions tax established by his precedent.

He also advocated converting Canada into an “clean and conventional” energy superpower and for accelerating the approval of large energy projects.

Carney has defined itself as “pragmatic” when asked about possible conflicts between its energy policies and its climatic values.
