After evaluating association proposals to land a water search engine on the lunar surface, NASA is choosing to explore alternative approaches to send its viper rover (volatile research polar explorer rover) to the moon, as announced on Wednesday.
NASA said it will cancel its call for scientific collaboration proposals on lunar volatilewhich was looking for opportunities to send Viper to the moon without cost to the US government. “We appreciate the effort of those who participated in the call for collaboration proposals for the Scientific Association of Lunar Volatiles,” said Nicky Fox, associate administrator of the NASA scientific missions management in Washington. “We expect with interest the development of volatile science in the future with Viper while we continue the exploration efforts of the NASA from the moon to Mars.”
NASA has been investigating how to take the rover to the moon after the project was canceled in July 2024. The agency will announce a new Viper strategy in the future.
