The Regional Health Directorate of Ayacucho (DIRESA) has reported 90 asthma cases recorded until epidemiological week 14 of 2025. Although the figure shows a slight decrease compared to the same period of the previous year, specialists warn that it is a disease that should not be underestimated.
The epidemiologist Yildo Martos Arce, of the Directorate of Epidemiology of the DIRESA, warned about the importance of identifying in time the symptoms of asthma, especially in children under five years of age, the most affected group.
“This is an inflammatory disease that compromises the respiratory system and can cause difficulty breathing, persistent cough, chest pressure and wheezing,” he explained.
Martos stressed that the origin of asthma is multifactorial. While it has a genetic basis, it is also associated with environmental factors such as climate change, dust, pollen and mites.
“These elements act as triggers that can aggravate the condition in vulnerable people,” he added.

Within the framework of World Asthma Day, DIRESA Ayacucho reiterated its call to the population to maintain protection measures against respiratory infections, such as the use of mask in case of symptoms, frequent handwashing and physical distancing. In addition, he recommended completing vaccination schemes, especially in children and older adults, with vaccines such as influenza and pneumococcus.
Despite the reduction in the number of cases, the health authority urged not to lower the guard.
“Asthma can be controlled if it is detected and treated on time. Our responsibility as a region is to prevent and protect the health of the most vulnerable,” concluded the epidemiologist.
