“The influenza vaccine is one of the 20 vaccines that international organizations are currently available and that all countries should have to use in the population at risk, including children under 5 years of age, a biological product that protects against influenza by influenza viruses,” said the Pediatrician Marco Labrador Ramírez.
“Sometimes it is cataloged as a banal disease, without major consequences, it happens as a picture of fever, nasal mucus, muscle aches, cough, perhaps loss of appetite, in a period of 4-8 days there is already spontaneous recovery; however, not all organisms behave in the same way,” he said.
In this regard, he said that in children under five, that flu or infection with the influenza virus can alter the defensive capacity of the respiratory pathway and become the nest so that bacteria are in the environment, at home, preschool, nursery, school, can be lodged in the respiratory path and lead to bacterial infections.
It can lead to sinusitis problems, otitis media, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia or pneumonia, hence the importance of preventing the influenza altere virus, damage or modifies the defense mechanisms that the respiratory path has.
“Children under five are the most likely to acquire this type of infections; however, there are other risk groups, which is very important that the influenza vaccine be placed, for example pregnant women,” he explained.
“It seems that the pregnant woman only needs the tetanus vaccine, but she should have the influenza, the respiratory syncitial virus and that of the coronavirus,” he said.
Another very important risk group is made up of people over 65, because their immune system begins to exhaust and behaves like the defenses of a child under five years of age: “It is possible that a flu is complicated and ends in bronchopneumonia, pneumonia or pleural effusion.”
These risk groups are joined by those over 60 with diabetes, hypertension, heart disease. Kidney diseases, obesity, can make complications.
“Only one dose is placed, intramuscularly, and should be repeated annually. Because the vaccine is rebuilt every year, taking into account the type of flu virus that was circulating at the time when this biological product is manufactured,” concluded Dr. Marco Labrador.
