Peru starts the way to apply for the sailor as Intangible Heritage of Humanity | News

Peru began the path of the of elaboration of the technical file for the application of the choreographic and musical forms of the sailor to the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the UNESCO humanity (United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture, for its acronym in English).

To that end, this morning, a working meeting was held at the Antenor Orrego Auditorium of the Deconcentrated Directorate of Culture (DDC) of La Libertad, located in the city of Trujillo, where the version of the Safeguard Plan of the sailor was presented, as part of the process of elaboration of the technical file of this emblematic dance before the UNESCO.

During the meeting, the first version of the Marinera Safeguard Plan was presented in La Libertad, prepared from the information obtained through individual and interviews with cultivators, musicians, choreographers, researchers and representatives of institutions linked to this cultural expression.

The Ministry of Culture said that this participatory methodology will continue to apply in eight other regions of the country, such as Lambayeque, Lima, Piura, Arequipa and Puno, with the aim of building a representative and decentralized vision for the application file. In this way, the Peruvian State, through the Ministry of Culture, reaffirms its commitment to the safeguarding and promotion of this emblematic dance.

The session was attended by the director of the DDC La Libertad, David Calderón de los Ríos, and the specialist of the Intangible Heritage Directorate of the Ministry of Culture, Fiorella Arteta, who addressed the validation of fundamental information to support the candidacy of this emblematic Peruvian dance. Also present were the representatives of Marinera associations, traditional musicians and dance scholars.

During the meeting, the richness and diversity of the sailor in the national territory was highlighted, stressing that each town of Peru has developed its own style, such as the northern sailor, Puneña or Arequipa, among others, which are accompanied by oral traditions that reflect the cultural identity of its communities.

He argued that this diversity constitutes one of the fundamental pillars of the technical file that will be presented to UNESCO, considering both the dance and musical aspects and the social, symbolic and pedagogical values ​​of the sailor.

At another , the Ministry of Culture, through its specialized and decentralized addresses, ratified its commitment to the promotion and safeguard of the country’s intangible cultural heritage and with the value of expressions that, such as the sailor, are an essential part of the soul and history of Peru.

He also recalled that the sailor was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1986, the first dance to receive that recognition, and is considered one of the most representative cultural manifestations of the country, promoting identity, integration and national pride.

Finally, he informed that as part of this visit to Trujillo, the commissioners of the Ministry of Culture also made the Audiovisual Marinera Ballerinas Registry in the Moche district.

He indicated that this material will serve for the elaboration of the video that will accompany the application file, which will gather testimonies of cultors, dance scenes in and social contexts, as well as traditional musical expressions that accompany this living cultural practice.
