The recent strategy of the CUP, marked by a turn in its alliance policy and a pragmatic approach to matches such as PSC, has caused internal tensions and discontent among former militants. The last to raise the voice has been Xavi Angelergues, former training of the formation in Vilanova I La Geltrú, who has hardly charged the party in a publication on social networks.
“They not only expelled me from the CUP for saying that ‘a woman has a vagina and not penis’. The other expulsion file was ‘for repeatedly asking how to achieve independence.’ Drift is so unfortunate that stopping military there is the best thing that has happened to us,” Angelergues written in response to a news that reported the disposition of the CUP to agree again with the PSC in social matters.
Angelergue’s discomfort is not an isolated case. In recent months, several critical sectors have accused the direction of the party to abandon its foundational principles. The Garbí procés, recently approved as an internal road map, proposes to maintain a combative discourse while the institutional incidence is increased. This new line has led the CUP to support proposals such as the Decree on Housing of the Government, promoted by Salvador Illa, leader of the PSC in the Parliament.
Although from the management it insists that these pacts are made under their own conditions and without giving up anti -capitalist values, voices such as Angelergues consider that the party has lost its course and its independence identity.
Uncertain future
The electoral context is not favorable either. According to the latest CEO barometer, the CUP faces a remarkable setback that could leave it with just three seats in the Parliament. A loss of relevance that, for many, is pushing the party to seek political survival formulas that contradict its foundational principles.
While from the dome the tactical utility of the pacts with the PSC is defended and criticisms of Junts are redoubled, accused of feeding the extreme right, the internal debate in the CUP is intensified. The fracture between the institutional strategy and the most radical militant base seems increasingly evident. What is clear is that this legislature can be the last CUP cartridge to resurrect.
