The Royal University Institute of European Studies of the CEU San Pablo University has presented its new book entitled ‘The NATO Challenge: , Strategy and New Global Challenge’, which reflects on the future of the organization and the current “crisis” of European security.

This was stated on Tuesday the research center at an event organized at the CEU San Pablo University in , in which some of the authors of the book have discussed issues such as “the crisis of the liberal order”, “the transatlantic bond” and the “threats” to which Europe and NATO faces.

“We need more defense culture in Spain, there are few books about NATO,” said the director of the Royal Institute of European Studies, José María Beneyto, explaining that in NATO “a new era has been opened” and that Europe is “at a critical moment.”

Beneyto has lamented that, although the - represents “a shared vision of security”, it is currently being questioned, in his opinion, by the US president, Donald Trump, who is “creating enormous instability in Europe and the United States.”

In this sense, he said that the European Commission “believes that it is only enough to raise funds”, claiming that “not everything is defense spending” and that “financing is not enough.” Let’s see if Europe reacts, you can spend a lot and badly, “he said.

Sánchez-Tapia: “The future of NATO depends on Europeans”

The colloquium ‘The future of NATO and the European security crisis’, held at the Faculty of Economic Sciences, has also had the participation of the Brigade General of the Army, Salvador Sánchez-Tapia, who has expressed that “it is not reasonable not even for Trump to want to wear an alliance that has cost decades to build.”

“If NATO is going to have a future or will not depend on what the Europeans do. If Trump sees that a revenue from NATO will bet on it, if he does not see it, he does not,” he said, thus defending Europe decides to “invest more” in his defense and “take the reins” of this.

For her part, the analyst and expert in Contrarorism, Gabriela Sánchez, said that “there is a much deeper interest of NATO leaders in which the organization is prepared for this new era”, detailing that since 2024 the focus is on providing the alliance of resources and capabilities.

With this, the Relations professor (USP-CEU), Antonio Alonso, has shared the words of the other authors, and has reiterated the existence of “a new international order.” “This is something else,” he concluded.
