The president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the British prime minister, Keir Starmer, will announce a commercial agreement between the two countries, according to official sources.
It would be the first bilateral pact reached by the Trump administration since imposed generalized tariffs on its commercial partners last April.
Although complete details have not yet been made public, the agreement will focus on the reduction of tariffs on key products such as steel, aluminum and British cars, as well as in adjustments to the digital rate that taxes large US technological technological ones in the United Kingdom.
The announcement comes after weeks of intense negotiations led by a British delegation in Washington, which sought to mitigate the impact of 10% tariffs imposed by the United States to most of its partners, and 25% on strategic sectors such as metal and automotive.
Although London was not the subject of the most severe “reciprocal” tariffshe did suffer the consequences of the general measures adopted by Trump in his so -called “Liberation Day”.
The agreement does not constitute a comprehensive free trade agreement, but a framework of understanding that could pave the way for broader future negotiations.
In the words of the lawyer specialized in International Trade Timothy Brightbill, it is probably “an agreement to initiate negotiations, identifying a framework of issues to discuss in the coming months,” he told the The New York Times.
For Prime Minister Starmer, the pact represents a significant diplomatic achievement in a complex economic context.
-Since his arrival to power, he has adopted an approach strategy to the Trump administration, avoiding public criticism and seeking to maintain a fluid relationship with Washington. This approach has included symbolic gestures, such as the delivery of an invitation from King Carlos III for a second state visit of Trump to the United Kingdom, and the adoption of a conciliatory tone on sensitive international issues.
However, the agreement has also raised criticism within the United Kingdom. Various political and social sectors have expressed concern about the lack of transparency in negotiations and the possibility that British standards are committed in areas such as food and technology.
Organizations such as Trade Justice Movement have urged the government to submit the agreement to parliamentary scrutiny, warning about the risks of adopting an executive approach similar to Trump’s.
In parallel, London has recently closed a commercial agreement with India, which provides for the progressive reduction or elimination of tariffs on 90% of the products currently taxed, facilitating British whiskey and cars exports, among others.
These initiatives reflect the strategy of the British government to diversify its commercial relations in a global environment marked by protectionism and geopolitical tensions.
The official announcement of the agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom is scheduled for 10:00 hours in Washington (16:00 in Madrid), in a joint press conference at the White House. Prime Minister Starmer is expected to offer a later statement from London.
